    Alright, here's how you do something like starcruiser BETTER. Step One, axe the mandatory ongoing plotline that repeats every two days. In its place add full plotlines that take place over a week every month. The hotel operates normally without an ongoing narrative or schedule otherwise. The plotlines can be preplanned and just picked from a list so the actors don't have to memorize new lines every time, and the weeks in between give the actors time to rest and practice in between. Also, don't try to include guests in these activities. It's a logistical nightmare. Have the story events consist almost entirely of preplanned scenes in inaccessible areas, or random chance encounters that don't require much set-up. Trying to include the audience to that degree necessitates pre-planning their schedule to ensure they show up to the scenes, which at higher amounts leads to feeling drained. Focusing on non-involved random chance encounters during the story scenes where the audience is not expected to participate can create greater immersion, the sense of a world going on around you that does things when you arent looking. And when it comes to the bigger more actiony plot important scenes on the balconies or otherwise out of reach, those would take place at the same pre-planned times regardless of which story is taking place, so the guests know when they'll take place and can choose to go if they like, so it's more of an optional performance you can go see if you like. On top of this, twice a week, have a smaller performance like Gaia's show or some similar thing, with rotating performers, Gaia being the one that reoccurs most frequently, so that there's still entertainment during the time between the big Star Wars Story moments. Step Two, get rid of the wandering in-character actors during non-show times. They cost a lot, it's a hard job, they get swamped by guests, the lack of a continuous narrative that repeats again and again makes it not make sense, get rid of it. Still keep the in-character staff and such, but just have them all be humans. Don't have them be especially involved in the big immersive shows, but let the owner be in a couple scenes. Step Three, change it from a cruise to a space hotel orbiting the planet from Star Wars Land. In narrative, it can be a more recent effort from some of the richer but less shady residents of Star Wars Land Planet to offer a nice place to stay to space travellers and to bring in wealthier folk to rejuvinate Star Wars Land Planet's economy through more legitimate means, with ties to some criminal underbelly stuff, but ultimately with the good of the people in mind. This way, guests can be allowed to leave and come back whenever they want, because it's a more permanent fixture than a cruise. It also means there's a reason for the hotel to be attached to Star Wars Land, no longer being a luxury cruise, but rather a slightly higher-end hotel with some criminal ties. You could just throw another space elevator thing in Star Wars Land which you need hotel access on your Disney Band or whatever to open. On top of this, it also gives a reason for the ship to look more "Star Wars," i.e. kind of run down while also being futuristic, because it's not luxury, it's an effort from a backwater planet to offer a high-end dwelling, despite being, galactically speaking, rather poor. Step Four, more droids! It's easier to have some guys in a room somewhere pilot around droids for a few hours than it is to have humans spend hours at a time in costume, in character, interacting with guests! Plus, once you've paid for the droids to be built, you basically just need to pay some guys to sit in a room and play with cool robots, which is more fun and less labor intensive for those guys, and also cheaper long term, since you aren't paying actors to act non-stop. You could even just use modified versions of commercial droids where you just give them a paint job, swap out the sounds it can play, and attach a camera and microphone so the controller guys can see and hear without having to be there. Step Five, encourage LARP! While this may seem counterintuitive when not including guests in the story, it actually provides greater immersion. If other guests around you are playing their own characters with reasons for being there, the world feels more alive than if you're just interacting with actors with pre-planned schedules and stories who only appear in the designated time and only interact within an extremely limited range of discussion. Plus, making it explicitly clear that guests will not be interacting with the story stops people from trying to be the main character of a story that wasn't written for them. They're only acting that way because they're being told they will get to "live their Star Wars story." If you don't give them that expectation and simply provide them a themed space to do as they please with, you're giving them agency in whatever narrative they want to tell, ACTUALLY letting them live their own Star Wars story. Step Six, now that you've done all this, lower the damn price!!

    • @FirstnameLastname-sb3hj
      @FirstnameLastname-sb3hj 19 часов назад

      P.S. immersion isn't created through actions but rather through perceptions. If you give me a pickaxe prop and have me smash fake rocks, that isn't immersive. But if I try, really try and picture mining with a pickaxe, imagine the sound of chipping rock, the breeze of the area im doing it in, the weight of the pickaxe in my hands and the burning in my muscles, that IS immersive. The more aspects of reality you can replicate, and the more immersion breaking things you can hide or persuade the audience to ignore, the more immersive the experience will be. The schedule of the starcruiser throws a wrench in the immersion because it no longer feels like the world is moving naturally around you, it feels like clockwork, where things move mechanically and predictably. And things like the awkward stares of the actors when you try and LARP or not being permitted to carry a prop weapon or the god-forsaken film score during the performances only serve to accentuate how synthetic the experience is. And even if I get to hold a lightsaber, it isn't going to be immersive because it is very clearly a prop. If you want me to be able to ignore that I'm holding a prop, you need to supplement the lack of immersion in that area with immersion elsewhere. For example a space that feels real or a story that I am invested in so I can focus on that and not how the prop is something I could just buy online. And the easiest way to allow me to become immersed is to immerse myself, to provide me the tools to make my own experience instead of trying to dictate my experience for me. The less deliberately constructed the experience feels, and the more expected aspects of reality are present, the easier it is to become immersed. Starcruiser was a failure even in its very premise of an immersive experience, because it failed to understand what immersion even was, viewing it as the prescence of themed busy work rather than the emulation of reality. Actors who show up explicitly to be spoken to by you in a limited range of dicussion for only designated times is not immersive. The cashier shooting the shit with you about something that happened a while ago in a freeform discussion IS immersive. Less of the former, more of the latter.

    I just don’t get why it had to be a roleplaying experience. Why couldn’t they just build a massive hotel themed like a ship and had a few actors walking around and some fun activities for kids and access to the whole park, like any other hotel there. They just made it way more complicated than it needed to be in my opinion.

    I feel like it wouldn’t be that hard to have a few security acting as “town watch” walking around in costume and semi in character, but just replying to any smalltalk or quest stuff with versions of “im on duty and cannot be detained”. have them helping to move people on if their monopolising characters, help out guests who are in distress, checking in on the wellbeing of performers, literally intervene if guests cross boundaries with performers, maybe also acting as town cryers to announce story events. I feel like that’d fit into the atmosphere perfectly, and also up the safety and comfort level of both performers and guests

    Thank you so much for this "very" in-depth look at this offering from Disney. As a huge Star Wars fan, when this was announced i was both excited and sad, because i knew i'd never be able to rationalize to myself paying this much for a 2-day "experience"... While i feel for you, thanks for showing that for many of us, we didn't miss that much and in fact to your point, this whole thing was akin to most of the parks' usual fare of entertainment that you get while simply walking around. I wholy agree that Disney has gotten quite greedy in later years. We went to parks like 10 years ago, and like you said, found that they had a lot of "free stuff" that the other parks in the region charged for... Friends who've been there lately agree that it's become quite the money grab since the pandemic.

    Rock Star Wars "Altona Joke" 29:07 : I don't think this was a biblical joke, but possibly hinting at a group of German immigrants who are part of the church. My best guess is that they are referring to the part of Hamburg called Altona, hence the ironic joke of not having any weapons and being pacifists. Also, the other Altona joke between Han and C-3PO matches this as people in the north of Germany speak a dialect known as "low German". I could imagine the actor of C-3PO being from an immigrant family himself.
